Moritz von Schwind spent his youth in Vienna, where the composer Schubert was among his friends. He illustrated some of Schubert's songs and moved to Munich in 1828. His wall pictures of the "Singers' Contest" in the castle of the Wartburg were praised everywhere, and he played the violin at a festival held in their honour. Late in life he went back to Vienna and made designs for the foyer of the Vienna State Opera. He died in Pöcking in Bavaria in 1871.
