About this work

A wood-engraved page from Harper's Weekly shows interior scenes of a Chinese club house, with men playing a table game beneath hanging paper lanterns and others reclining with long pipes on a couch and at a low table. Calligraphic signs, a hanging scroll, and a small shrine with incense appear in the rooms. The print is titled The Chinese in N.Y. Scene in a Baxter St. Club House, dated 1874, and is attributed to Winslow Homer.
