About this work
A hand-coloured caricature shows the French flagship L'Orient listing sharply and sinking, its gunports and rigging crowded with crew, while sailors struggle in the water and in a small boat. A British two-decked ship with a Union flag and the name Vanguard stands at right, and another vessel and smoke fill the background. The print is dated 1798 and was made by Thomas Rowlandson to commemorate Nelson's victory at the Nile.
