About this work

This engraved print, titled The Fall of Babylon and attributed to Maarten van Heemskerck, shows a sprawling city with towers and domed buildings beneath a sky of swirling fire and smoke. Two winged angels hover above, while crowds of figures in foreground flee, kneel, or gesture in distress before a crowned ruler. The print is dated in the lower right corner to 1569, and its inscription credits Heemskerck as inventor and Philip Galle as engraver.
