About this work

An engraved print shows the Virgin seated on a draped throne beneath a canopy, holding the infant Christ who reaches toward a small fruit. Two winged angels kneel on either side playing lutes, and a distant hilltop landscape with a fortified building appears through an opening at left. The print bears a Latin inscription beneath the image and is attributed to Maerten de Vos (design) and Antonius Wierix (engraving), dated 1584 on the plate.
