About this work

An engraved interior scene shows a gesturing preacher standing at left while a crowd of men and women reacts around him in a barred prison room. A seated man at left and a smoking figure at lower right add to the crowded composition, and a barred window and open arched doorway appear behind. The print is inscribed Vol. 1, p. 175 and bears the 1793 publication line for this illustration from Tobias Smollett's novel, drawn by Thomas Rowlandson and engraved by C. Grignion.
