About this work
This hand-coloured print by Thomas Rowlandson shows two contrasting pairs of figures, labelled St. James's above and St. Giles's below. The upper scene depicts two elegantly dressed women with towering powdered hair seated at a table, one holding a bowl, while the lower scene shows two stout working-class women in colourful skirts and bodices standing close together. The pen-and-ink hatching is washed with pink, blue, yellow and green watercolour.
