About this work
This engraving, titled The Vanity of Women: Masks and Bustles and attributed to Maerten de Vos, shows several richly dressed women in a shop interior with ruffled collars and voluminous skirts. A masked figure and a horned devil appear among the group, and a seated woman adjusts a garment while a shopkeeper displays wares on a table. Inscriptions in Dutch and French above and below the scene comment on pride and vanity.
