About this work
An etching titled L'Armoire by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, dated 1778, shows an interior scene in which a young man peers out from an open wardrobe while two women rush toward it, one wielding a stick, with a dog at their feet. A bed with drawn curtains and a sleeping figure occupies the right side of the room, and a barefoot woman stands at the left edge. The fine hatched lines and dense shading give the composition a dramatic, theatrical quality.
