Fragonard painted more than 550 pictures, and only five of them are dated. He was born in Grasse in 1732, the son of a glover, and studied with Chardin and Boucher in Paris. After winning the Prix de Rome, he lived at the French Academy in Rome and toured Italy with Hubert Robert in 1760. Back in Paris he painted mostly for private patrons, and his best-known work is The Swing. The Revolution took those patrons away, so in 1790 he left Paris for his cousin's house in Grasse.
