About this work

A dense Florida-style forest opens into a sunlit clearing where a group of armed explorers in armor and red-banner regalia gathers around a horse, while others rest on the grass in the foreground. Hanging Spanish moss, tall cypress trunks, and palmetto undergrowth frame the scene, and a bright gap in the canopy lights the distant glade. This print, titled Ponce de León in Florida, is attributed to Thomas Moran.
