About this work

A hand-colored print by David Alois Schmid, dated 1831, shows a cobbled town square dominated by a multi-story building with a clock tower and shuttered windows. A horse-drawn carriage moves along the left side while a woman in a long dress and a man with a bundle walk across the foreground, beside a stone fountain. The German and French captions identify the building as the citizens' hospital and orphanage on the suburb side.
