About this work

This etching by Anders Zorn, titled Fence and dated 1913, shows a nude figure seen from behind standing in shallow water beside a line of wooden fence posts and rails. Tall reeds and a band of grass fill the background beneath an open sky, and the figure is rendered with dense, fine hatching. The composition is held together by the diagonal rhythm of the fence and the reflections in the water.
