About this work

A pencil study shows a classical civic scene with columns and a raised platform on the right, where two draped figures sit in a chair in conversation. On the left, a group of figures in togas leads a nude, slumped youth toward a block while a crowd fills the background. The study was made in 1785 by Jacques-Louis David and is a preparatory composition for the Study for the Execution of the Sons of Brutus.
