After his second failed try at the Prix de Rome, David went on a hunger strike that lasted two and a half days. He won the prize in 1774 and went on to study in Rome, where he later painted Oath of the Horatii. Back in Paris, he supported the Revolution and was a friend of Robespierre. He voted for the death of Louis XVI and painted The Death of Marat in 1793. He later sided with Napoleon, and after Napoleon's fall he exiled himself to Brussels, where he died.
