About this work

This engraved print shows a group of muscular men hacking apart a stone altar with axes, mattocks and hammers, while others cut down trees and carry timber in the background. A smoke-filled sky above a burning offering appears in the upper left, and a Latin caption at the bottom reads that they tore down the altar and built another altar to the Lord.
