About this work

This hand-coloured relief etching from 1789 by William Blake shows a bearded elderly bard playing a harp while a group of figures listens, including a kneeling man and several young women and children. The verse above the scene is written in Blake's own script, framed by stylised flourishes and a wavy vine-like line, with washes of blue, yellow and green behind the figures. The work belongs to the Songs of Innocence and of Experience series, copy C.
