In 1788 Blake invented relief etching, a way of printing his words and pictures from the same copper plate. His wife Catherine Boucher mixed and applied his colours and worked as his printmaker. He was born in Soho and lived in London his whole life, apart from three years at a cottage in Felpham. People of his time thought he was mad, and his own exhibition in 1809 sold none of the temperas or watercolours. He died in 1827 while still working on his illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy.
