About this work

A hand-coloured print titled The Contrast 1792 by Thomas Rowlandson, dated 1792, sets two circular medallions side by side. The left medallion shows a robed woman with a helmet, scales of justice, a Magna Carta scroll, a lion and a ship under sail, labelled British Liberty, while the right shows a wild-haired woman with a trident and a severed head beside a hanging figure, labelled French Liberty. Lists of virtues and vices beneath each medallion contrast the two systems.
