About this work

A pen and watercolour drawing shows a group of uniformed soldiers in a rowboat on calm water beneath a moonlit sky, while others scramble up a rock and a stone tower toward a figure hanging from a rope. The composition is rendered in grey and brown washes with pale highlights, and a chained wooden staircase appears at the right.
