About this work

A pen and watercolour drawing shows a crowded Canterbury-Dover stagecoach, pulled by galloping horses, passing a country house beside a tree-lined road. A broad river estuary with several moored sailing ships and a distant town opens out to the left, while a smaller cart and walking figures appear on the roadway. This work, The Canterbury-Dover Coach Passing Vanbrugh Castle, is attributed to Thomas Rowlandson and dated 1795.
