About this work

A pencil sketch on grey-toned paper shows a large, billowing ceiba tree beside a small thatched building along a riverbank. Below, a sailing boat with a single mast and sail drifts on the water, and a separate canoe-like vessel appears at upper right, with handwritten labels reading "Ceiba tree, Mompox" and "Champan." The work is attributed to Frederic Edwin Church and dated 1853.
