About this work

This painted Nativity shows the Virgin Mary kneeling in prayer beside the infant Christ laid in a straw-filled manger, while Saint Joseph stands behind with a staff and a group of angels gather around the child. A radiant light breaks through the clouds above, and shepherds with their sheep appear in the distance beneath a ruined classical structure.
