About this work

A black-and-white lithograph shows an elderly man in profile, wearing a skullcap and a dark fur-trimmed cape over white vestments, seated in a carved chair with tasseled finials while resting one hand on an orb. Printed text below the image gives the sitter's name as Pius VIII, his birth at Cingoli on 20 November 1761, his election as pope on 5 March 1829, and his former name as Graf von Castiglione.
