Josef Kriehuber started art class at the Imperial Academy in Vienna when he was only 13. To pay for his studies, he worked long hours as a lithographer for the publisher Trentsensky, and his first lithographic portraits appeared in 1826. He became the most sought-after and best-paid portraitist of Biedermeier Vienna, and his sitters included Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and Paganini. The source gives his output as nearly 3,000 portrait lithographs in one place and more than 3,000 in another. As photography spread, his commissions fell off, and he died poor in his native Vienna in 1876. Browse 404 works by Josef Kriehuber from 6 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
