About this work
A large stone pyramid dominates this painted capriccio, its weathered blocks overgrown with ivy and an opening at its base. A classical statue on a pedestal, a fallen sarcophagus and a broken column stand among the ruins, while three travellers gather by a stream in the foreground. The work is by Hubert Robert, dated 1764, and is held in the Wikimedia Commons collection.
