Hubert Robert spent eleven years in Rome, filling sketchbooks with motifs he used in paintings for the rest of his career. The overgrown ruins of Piranesi's circle shaped him so much that he got the nickname Robert des ruines. Back in Paris, his first Salon in 1767 had thirteen paintings, and Diderot wrote that the ruins woke grand ideas in him. During the Revolution he was arrested in October 1793 and held for ten months. In prison he painted at least 53 canvases, and he was freed a week after Robespierre fell. Browse 197 works by Hubert Robert from 43 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
