About this work

A gilded frame surrounds a painted view of a waterfront quarter of tall, pale houses with chimneys, shaded by a heavy grey smoke cloud and with flames rising behind the rooftops. A dense crowd of figures in cloaks and tricorn hats watches from the foreground while small boats and gondolas work the water at left. The inscription on the frame plate identifies the work as Francesco Guardi's depiction of the fire in the San Marcuola quarter.
