Francesco Guardi spent his early career in Venice, painting religious pictures with his older brother Gian Antonio. After Gian Antonio died in 1760, he turned to vedute, views of the city. The early ones show Canaletto's influence, but his brushstrokes grew looser and his architecture more freely imagined. Where Canaletto shows Venice in sunny daylight, Guardi often paints clouded skies above a city at dusk. A century later, the French Impressionists prized his work highly.
