About this work

This etching shows a group of helmeted soldiers working on a churned, chalky slope while a bright explosion bursts in the upper left beneath heavy smoke clouds. Figures in long coats dig and carry tools in the foreground, and the dense hatched lines give the scene a dramatic, dark tonality. The print is attributed to Théophile Alexandre Steinlen and dated 1917.
