About this work
The painting shows a courtroom scene in which a lawyer in a black robe stands at left, facing the bench, while a crowd of spectators and officials sits in the warmly lit background and a woman in a dark hat is seated at right. The loose, dark brushwork and expressive faces are set within an ornate gilt frame. The work is by Jean-Louis Forain, dated 1908, and is titled "En Correctionelle."
