About this work

This black and white engraving shows a crowded formal assembly in a wood-paneled hall, with men in dark robes and wide white collars gathered around a draped table. Several figures raise their hands in oath while others hold up papers, and a chandelier hangs above the scene. The inscription identifies the work as the solemn assembly of plenipotentiaries of Philip IV of Spain and the General States of the Dutch Republic who confirmed the peace at Münster in 1648, attributed to Gerard ter Borch and dated 1650.
