About this work

A hand-colored print by Thomas Rowlandson titled Birthday Preparations shows a crowded dressing room where elaborately dressed women are attended by a kneeling servant who adjusts a gown while another figure holds up a gilt-framed mirror. A woman in a towering plumed headdress stands at the center, and a man in a powdered wig and red coat watches from behind a folding screen. A basket of roses and a dish sit on the floor in the foreground.
