About this work

A hand-colored etching shows an elderly man in a green robe and pointed cap peering through a large brass telescope in a vaulted Gothic study, with a celestial globe and scattered instruments nearby. In an adjoining alcove, a couple embraces beside a draped bed, a satirical contrast to the astronomer's fixation on the heavens.
