About this work

A hand-colored print by Thomas Rowlandson, dated 1808, shows a long, arched interior of the Customs House crowded with men in tailcoats, top hats and breeches. A large Roman-numeral clock hangs on the far wall beneath a coffered ceiling, and a woman carrying a basket of oranges moves through the throng near the lower right.
