About this work

The Contest between the Muses and the Pierides by Maerten de Vos depicts a group of richly dressed female musicians gathered in a wooded grove, playing flute, lute, harp and viol while others sing from sheet music. A winged horse statue stands on a fountain basin among the trees, and a river valley with classical ruins and mountains opens to the left.
