About this work

This drawing by Alphonse Legros, dated 1854, shows a group of bearded men in dark academic robes seated around a cluttered table with inkwells, bottles and writing tools. A wooden balustrade runs across the upper part of the composition, and the wash shading gives the scene a dim, meditative atmosphere.
