Alphonse Legros grew up in Dijon, and the peasants and farms he saw on visits to relatives became the subjects of many of his works. In Paris, Champfleury brought him into the Realists around Gustave Courbet, and he became best known for his church interiors. Encouraged by his friend Whistler, he moved to England in 1863. He became Slade Professor at University College London in 1876. His English was never fluent, so he taught mostly by demonstration, drawing a head or torso for his students in an hour or less.
