About this work
A hand-coloured caricature shows a stout man in a blue coat, red waistcoat, yellow breeches and striped stockings, bending to peer through a telescope on a tripod toward a sun-like burst of yellow rays. Two caricatured heads appear within the rays, one in a white wig and one in a tricorn hat with a cockade, and a line of sailing ships sits on the horizon. The print is credited to Thomas Rowlandson, with the title John Bull making observations on the Comet, and is held by Wikimedia Commons.
