About this work
This hand-colored etching, Plate 38 from Thomas Rowlandson's World in Miniature, shows a preacher delivering a sermon from an elevated wooden pulpit within a Gothic church interior. A seated congregation and crowd of standing onlookers, including women in red and blue garments and young children, fill the nave beside tall stone columns and pointed windows. The sheet bears the imprint that it was published in October 1816 at R. Ackermann's, 101 Strand.
