About this work

The cover of this 1920 print by Jean-Louis Forain shows a helmeted soldier in a loose uniform gripping a tall pole from which a windblown flag streams. Bold black ink lines sketch the figure and fabric against a pale tan ground, with a faint horizon and town silhouette behind. Red script lettering and the series label Tome II identify it as the second volume of wartime drawings from 1914 to 1919.
