About this work

Two heads in pen and ink are drawn side by side on a pale sheet: a bearded older man in profile with thick curling hair, and a younger head with wavy hair turned toward the viewer. The hatching is dense and the forms are modeled with careful cross-hatching, suggesting studies after antique sculpture. This sketch by Maarten van Heemskerck is dated 1532 and comes from his Roman sketchbook, folio 39 verso.
