About this work
A lithograph by Joseph Pennell titled The Cut at Paraiso, dated 1912, shows a steep railway cut through rocky hillsides. A steam locomotive pulls freight wagons across a wooden trestle, while curving tracks and small figures of workers fill the foreground and middle ground. Low buildings and palm-like trees sit on the far slope beneath a dark mountain peak.
