In 1883 Joseph Pennell went to Italy for The Century Magazine and drew his etchings straight onto the copper plates. He was born in Philadelphia and studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The next year a long commission took him and his wife, the writer Elizabeth Robins, to London. He drew cathedrals, city skylines and factories, and later the Panama Canal while it was still being built. He made over 1800 prints and died in Brooklyn in 1926.
