About this work

A hand-coloured caricature print shows a helmeted, Britannia-like woman holding a Union Jack shield and spear beside a man in a red uniform with a purple sash who leans on a pedestal inscribed FORTITUDE. Beneath a banner reading GOD SAVE THE KING, a cowering man in green coat and tan breeches recoils from a horned devil, a pistol lying on the ground at his feet. Thomas Rowlandson made this work, published in 1800 as Britannia's Protection, or, Loyalty Triumphant.
