About this work

A hand-coloured etching titled False Courage by Thomas Rowlandson, dated 1788, shows a duel on an open field. A man in a blue coat kneels and fires a pistol while a cloud of smoke rises, as a gentleman in orange stands with a raised arm and another pistol, and onlookers react with alarm. A horse-drawn carriage and a dropped glove on the grass suggest the staged nature of the encounter.
