About this work

This hand-colored etching presents two comic scenes side by side, one showing an impassioned speaker pointing from a lectern toward a window while a crowd gazes up at him. The right panel shows a red-coated man addressing a seated audience in a gallery, with spectators leaning over a balcony above. Thomas Rowlandson made this print, dated 1792, under the title An Essay on the Sublime and Beautiful, The Maiden Speech.
