About this work

This pen and grey wash drawing titled Philipines by Adelaide Claxton shows a crowded cabin-like interior with figures in mid-19th-century dress, including women in full skirts and men in frock coats and checked trousers. A large diagonal wooden beam cuts across the composition, and ship pictures hang on the panelled walls beside shuttered windows.
