About this work
A hand-colored print shows a busy crossroads in front of the Elephant and Castle inn on the Brighton Road, with coaches, a fly van, and galloping teams of horses crowding the street. Pedestrians, a signpost pointing toward Lambeth and Kennington, and two greyhounds in the foreground populate the scene. The print, titled Coaching: The Elephant and Castle on the Brighton Road, was made by Theodore Henry Adolphus Fielding after a painting by James Pollard and dated 1826.
