Yashima Gakutei worked for some time in Osaka, making privately commissioned woodblock prints called surimono and book illustrations. He was born there around 1786, the illegitimate son of a samurai known as Hirata. His mother later married into the Yashima clan, which explains the artist's name. He studied with Hokusai and Totoya Hokkei and wrote many humorous kyōka poems, which he used in his prints. He died in 1868, and most of what is known about him has been surmised from his work.
